SCHOOL DAY

Our schoolday starts at 8.15 a.m. and ends at 2.15 p.m. Sometimes school starts a bit later or ends a bit earlier, but it's always between those hours. Nowadays we don't have any extra-curricular activities after school. But there is an "after school club" for those 1st or 2nd graders whose parents go to work.

Each lesson lasts 45 minutes and then we have 15 minutes break. Only p.e. and crafts lessons are 90 minutes long and they are usually first classes in the morning or last in the afternoon. Everybody has to go out to the schoolyard during the break. Meanwhile the classrooms are aired and blackboards cleaned.

After three or four lessons there is the school lunch. It's free and very delicious. There's always a main course with salads and vegetables and crispbread and milk. In Finland almost everybody drinks milk at lunch (it's good for your bones!).

Once a week, on Thursday mornings we gather together in the school hall. Usually there's a short speech, a prayer and then we all sing a hymn together.

An 9th grader from the Orivesi Comprehensive School wrote a diary of a typical schoolday. Click and read.
